People, Equipment & Special Events

WGN EQUIPMENT

In late September 2001, General Manager Greg Vreeland, Lee Rushenberg, and noted rail photographer Steve Glischinski took the train out for an afternoon photo shoot.  The photographs on this page were shot by Greg Vreeland on that day.  This train was to celebrate the completion of the paint job on the locomotive.

On September 10, 2001, noted railroad photographer and author Steve Glischinski arranged a photo train in which Soo Line #2719 made over 50 run-bys.  The photo train was the second of such trains and near perfect weather and the shear volume of opportunities delighted of dozens of railfans from around the country.

Wisconsin rail photographer Tim Martin has spent many days over the past two years in and around Spooner photographing the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad.  Here is a collection of some of his photos.

The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad offers many special events throughout the operating season.  Below you will find a brief description of each event with the dates listed.  Click on the title of each event to go to the page about the event and click on the photo to follow the links to see this year's photo gallery.

Spooner Rodeo Train Robberies
The Spooner Rodeo is one of our favorite special events throughout the year.  Each year the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad invites our friends from the Rawhide Renegades to come and spend a couple of days robbing our trains.  Young and old alike love to see the appropriately dressed outlaws come riding across a field adjacent to the tracks and stop the train.  The comedy show is something to see and the kids have an opportunity to take a short horseback ride.

Great Pumpkin Train
The Great Pumpkin Train is the busiest time of the year on the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad.  Year after year thousands of people converge on the railroad to take a ride to our giant pumpkin patch at Trego Jct.  We have games, food, motor car rides, coloring pages, face painting and of course marshmallows to roast.  This is a family favorite that many plan for all year long.

Future Photo Galleries will include:

  • A photo gallery of each special event - updated after each event
  • A photo gallery of each of our pieces of equipment
  • A family and friends photo gallery
  • Our favorites photo gallery
  • A Visitor's Gallery
